Stop Believing These 5 Senior Living COVID-19 Myths

Contrary to what the news is telling you, senior living communities are much safer than you might think. In fact, life at The Stayton affords engaging social, mental and physical opportunities for older adults that they may not find elsewhere. To set the record straight, we’re debunking the most common senior living COVID-19 myths and shedding some light on the benefits of community living even in the midst of a global pandemic.

Myth #1: The novel coronavirus has drastically affected quality of life.

Yes, the coronavirus has sparked the creation of new processes, protocols and procedures; however, it has not affected the quality of life at The Stayton. We continue to provide comfort, fulfillment and unparalleled health care to residents in all levels of care. At The Stayton, we still view every day as an opportunity and every interaction as a chance for lifelong friendship. Every morning, our residents wake up eager to live life to its fullest, mask and all.

Myth #2: It’s not safe to live in a senior living community during COVID-19.

Since the very beginning of the pandemic, we’ve implemented strategic protocols to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all residents are encouraged to practice social distancing and wear a mask when interacting with other individuals or team members to reduce virus exposure. These precautions are especially important in common areas of the community.

It’s also recommended individuals wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Our team members are trained to prioritize residents’ well-being, so they are always ready to respond to health situations in a safe, compassionate manner. They are also monitored closely for the onset of any suspicious symptoms and have their temperatures taken regularly.

Myth #3: Seniors are experiencing social isolation more than ever before.

Despite social distancing and mask mandates, our residents have a surprisingly active social life. It’s no secret communal living comes with a variety of benefits that fulfill the whole person — mind, body and spirit. In fact, living in a senior living community is proven to reduce loneliness, an emotion many seniors may unfortunately experience if they live on their own.

As a resident of The Stayton, you immediately have a place to call home with a built-in support system of friendly peers and compassionate team members. Not to mention, you’ll never have to worry about arranging long-term care. As the only true Life Care community in Fort Worth, Texas, The Stayton gives you ultimate peace of mind knowing you’ll be cared for no matter what happens.

Myth #4: Activities are canceled, so seniors don’t have anything to do.

If you know anything about The Stayton at Museum Way, you know our community places a high value on the arts. We believe there is no better comfort for the soul than the sound of a melody, colors on canvas or the magic of a musical. No one can know for sure how concerts, live music and theatrical productions will fit back into our “new normal,” but here at The Stayton, we’re doing everything we can to keep the spark alive and our residents inspired.

Though social distancing is practiced and masks are mandated, our residents still find many worthwhile ways to occupy their time and continue a rewarding, active lifestyle. Residents are free to start their morning with a leisurely stroll through our beautifully manicured grounds or tickle the ivories on our grand piano (after it’s properly sanitized, of course!). We’ve also found technology to be a saving grace during these uncertain times. Older adults love to explore online fitness classes such as yoga, pilates or light stretching. Some of our residents have even taken it upon themselves to start a virtual book club. Zoom calls or Skype sessions can be a great way to connect with friends or family members who may not be able to visit at this time. If you or a loved one would ever like to arrange a digital call, simply reach out to a team member at The Stayton, and we’ll be happy to help.

Now that you’ve learned a little bit about senior living COVID-19 myths, we hope you’ve discovered a more informed perspective of communal living. Senior living communities like The Stayton are still filled with engaged older adults passionate about the art of life. In fact, right now may actually be the best time to move to a senior living community. The truth is, when we stick together in times of adversity,  we can accomplish amazing things.
